When Irish writer George Russell, also known as A.E., was approached by fellow writer James Joyce wishing to borrow money, Russell agreed but insisted on getting something in writing from Joyce to acknowledge the debt. Joyce agreed and wrote something on a piece of paper and handed it over. When Russell looked at it, the message read A.E.I.O.U.
